Lucca is a year-round destination, offering something special in every season—from lively festivals and bustling markets to peaceful strolls along its ancient walls. Thanks to its temperate climate, the city enjoys mild winters and warm summers, making it an inviting place to visit no matter the time of year.

While seasonal variations in rainfall and temperature exist, extreme weather is rare. However, Tuscany is currently experiencing devastating flooding in some areas, which is a reminder of how unpredictable weather can be. With its changing weather patterns, packing smart is key to making the most of your visit. One essential for any season? Comfortable walking shoes—Lucca’s cobblestone streets and scenic paths are best explored on foot. No flip-flops! It’s also wise to stay informed about local conditions, especially in the wake of recent weather events, so you can adjust your plans accordingly.

Seasonal Variation & Rainfall

Lucca’s rainfall varies significantly throughout the year. While October typically sees the highest total rainfall, November has more rainy days, averaging 9.3 days with at least 0.04 inches of precipitation. If you prefer drier weather, the drier season lasts from May 28 to September 7, with July being the driest month, averaging just 3.8 wet days.

That said, autumn in Tuscany is simply too magical to miss. The crisp air, golden vineyards, and rich seasonal flavors make it one of the most enchanting times to visit. When our kids were young, Dario and I coached youth running, practicing outdoors no matter the weather. We always subscribed to the saying, ‘There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.’  The same applies to exploring Lucca—with a good rain jacket, compact umbrella and comfortable walking shoes, you’ll find that autumn’s misty mornings and occasional showers only add to the city's cozy, atmospheric charm.

A Quick Note on Local Style

Whenever friends and family visit Lucca, one of the first things they inevitably ask is, "What should I pack?" The answer depends on the season, but the key is layering and comfortable shoes for exploring the city's cobblestone streets. No matter the time of year, a light jacket and a stylish yet practical wardrobe will serve you well.

Italians, especially in Lucca, dress according to the season rather than the actual temperature. It’s common to see locals in scarves, coats, and boots in early spring, even on warmer days. While there’s no need to stress about blending in, a casual yet put-together look is more in line with local fashion—Italians rarely wear workout clothes outside of the gym.

In contrast, many Americans are used to wearing leggings, sweatpants, and athletic wear as everyday outfits, but in Italy, this style is generally reserved for actual exercise. While no one will stop you from wearing what’s comfortable, if you’d like to embrace the local style, opt for jeans, stylish sneakers, or classic layers instead. You’ll feel comfortable while blending in with the effortlessly chic Italian crowd.

To pack light, consider bringing fewer clothes and leaving space for a stylish addition to your wardrobe. Lucca offers fantastic shopping, and picking up a timeless piece will not only lighten your suitcase but also serve as a wearable souvenir from your trip.
