Italy is known for its culinary delights, but it’s not just food that takes center stage. The Bombardino, a velvety, boozy drink that’s synonymous with cozy winter evenings and après-ski gatherings in the Italian Alps. With its creamy texture and warming kick, it’s no wonder this drink has become a beloved tradition.
The Origins of Bombardino
The Bombardino originated in northern Italy, where frigid temperatures demanded something rich and warming. My quick research has it that a ski resort bar owner served a hot, egg-based alcoholic drink to a guest who exclaimed, “It’s like a bomb!” And thus, the Bombardino was born. Typically, it’s made with Advocaat, a Dutch egg-based liqueur, mixed with brandy or rum and topped with whipped cream.
A Blend of Cultures and a Family Connection
Advocaat, the heart of the Bombardino, can be tricky to find in the U.S. So, when our oldest son, who lives in the Netherlands, tried to bring us a bottle, we were thrilled. However, he forgot about the liquid restrictions at airport security, and the bottle didn’t make it past the checkpoint. Thankfully, Duty-Free came to the rescue, and he managed to bring another bottle home. This little adventure makes Bombardino feel even more special to our family—a true blend of cultures, just like us.
The Taste of Bombardino
Imagine the creamy richness of eggnog but with a more intense, custardy flavor and a kick of alcohol. The Advocaat provides a smooth, custard-like base, while the brandy or rum adds a pleasant warmth. Topped with whipped cream it's indulgent and cozy.
AdvoWHAT?!
If you can’t find Advocaat, (and don't have someone to personally deliver it from the Netherlands!) don’t worry—it’s pretty similar to eggnog, making it a versatile substitute in recipes or drinks. Unlike eggnog, which contains dairy, Advocaat is made with a richer proportion of eggs, giving it a custard-like consistency and distinctively creamy texture without the need for cream or milk. Advocaat also uses brandy as its base spirit, lending it a smoother and slightly more sophisticated flavor compared to the broader range of spirits sometimes used in eggnog. Whether you’re crafting a cocktail or baking a holiday treat, you can likely swap Advocaat for eggnog.
